Maker Faire 2011
From NortHACKton
Stephen and Martin attended the UK Maker Faire (sic) in Newcastle back in March. At the pub meet on 17th August we discussed attendance at the next faire (12th-13th March 2011) with an exhibit representing the hackerspace.
The Birmingham and Nottingham hackerspaces are also interested so it would be cool if we could put something together, together. Something modular which doesn't depend on us all meeting up across the country could look impressive given some scale. Can't think of an idea that wouldn't then depend on us having met up and arranged something though.
Ideas
General thoughts from the pub meet brainstorming were:
- A competition, where each hackerspace makes one or more entry
- A modular system, where each person makes a unit, and the whole together is on a large scale (e.g. swarm, LED wall)
- Some kind of loosely-coupled system where each part can take input from the preceding one (e.g. a Rube Goldberg machine, such as the ones other hackerspaces have done, or some other more bizarre functioning device)
Specific ideas:
- Wipeout video car racing game, physical recreation. Take inspiration from http://racer.sputnic.tv/ but add powerups, etc.
- Pinball machine - see Guy Burton's group email
- Catapults using users' coinage for ammunition
- Battle-bots using BBs or similar and a light sensor covered with foil for damage detection
- Large (10ft) static models
- Musical robots
- Robot swarm - "One man and his dogbot"
- Oversized "Operation" game
We need to register before 26th November 2010.
